Obituary

Winona L. Barnett, age 96 of Elwood, died December 30, 2010 at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood following an extended illness. She was born May 30, 1914 in Raleigh, Indiana. She formerly worked at a teacher. She was a 1932 graduate of Raleigh High School. She married Robert M. Barnett on May 15, 1937. In her long and interesting life, she raised Jersey show cattle and traveled to cattle expos as far away as St. Louis and Chicago as a young girl. She played in the New Castle Community band and graduated from Indiana Central College (now University of Indianapolis) in 1936. She taught music, history, Physical Education, Latin, English, directed choirs, bands, musicals, and plays all in high school and completed her career at the elementary level. While teaching, she also gave private music lessons. She taught in various locations in Indiana and in Norfolk, VA during WWII. After retiring from the public schools, she was very active in the Each One Teach One program (teaching English as a second language). She was active in the Evangelical United Brethren and United Methodist Churches serving in various groups, especially the choirs, the Women?s Societies, and the Elwood Quilters Club. She was also active in the Les Bonne Amiee home economics club. She was an avid collector of bells and had over 500 bells from all over the world. She could sing alto to any song played and play any song on the piano in three-part harmony. She once shared the stage, during WWII, with Homer and Jethro. She loved to make fancy desserts for clubs and her family and always had a kind word and a friendly smile for everyone. Survivors include: Son - Dr. Joseph F. (wife Mavis) Barnett of Elwood; 2 Grandchildren ? Anna Barnett of Columbus, and David (wife Anna) Styers-Barnett of Indianapolis; Great-Grandchildren ? Gillian Styers-Barnett and Norah Styers-Barnett of Indianapolis; 5 Nieces ? Raeanna Merritt, Joan Younce, Ann Jones, Leigh Baer, and Susan VanZant; Nephew ? Steve Bell; Special Friends ? Julie Hughes, Jim and Rhonda Luurtsema, Tom and Becky Moser, Roger and Cathy Gregg, and Cy and Marilyn Kincaid. She was preceded in death by: Parents ? H. Edward and Lillian (Louden) Heath; Husband who died July 10, 2007 ? Robert M. Barnett; Son ? Phillip E. Barnett; and Sister - Gayle Adair (Heath) Garver. Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday, January 3, 2011 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Chris Dare of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood officiating. A graveside service and burial will take place at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Friends Cemetery in Wabash. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 PM Monday, January 3, 2011 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. The family wishes to especially thank the staff of Community Parkview Care Center for their kindness and caring.
