Walter D. Sheets , age 81 of Elwood, passed away on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Community Heart & Vascular Hospital in Indianapolis after an extended illness.  He was born December 10, 1941 in Indianapolis, the son of Doyle E. and Gladys (Stockdale) Sheets.  Walt proudly served his country for 8 years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  Walt worked at Chrysler Corporation in Kokomo for 32 years and retired in 2002.  He was a member of U.A.W. #685 in Kokomo.  Walt married Joyce Harting on May 18, 1996 and they shared over 26 years of marriage together.

Walt was a longtime member of the Frankton Church of the Firstborn and the Elwood American Legion.  He enjoyed collecting coins, fishing, hunting, and raising rabbits for many years.  He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Walt's family includes his wife, Joyce Sheets of Elwood; 3 children, Monty Sheets of Elwood, Tia Sheets of Peru, and Robert Sheets of Pendleton; 2 step-children, Cindy (Rick) Kellermeyer of Elwood and Raymond (Stephanie) Holiday of Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  Walt was preceded in death by his parents; son, Chris Sheets, 2 sisters, Gloria and Brenda; and 2 step-brothers, Billy and Dickie Friedman.

Walt's wishes were to be cremated with no formal services.  Burial will take place at a later date in Forrestivlle Cemetery in rural Summitville.  Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood has been entrusted with Walt's funeral arrangements.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Frankton Church of the Firstborn through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com.
