Obituary

Von L. Waymire, age 86 of rural Elwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 2, 2018 with his family at his side at Riverview Health in Noblesville following a brief and unexpected illness.  He was born on April 20, 1931 in Tipton County, the son of Harold G. and Gladys Nell (Langston) Waymire.  Von was a farmer all of his life, owning and operating the Von Waymire Farm north of Elwood where he credits his beginning to a gracious gift of farm ground from Maurice Pierce.  He was a 1948 graduate of Swayzee High School.  Von married the love of his life, Mary L. Derrickson, on September 7, 1952 and they shared over 64 years of marriage together.  Von formerly sold John Deere farm equipment at in Tipton and at Harper's in Swayzee; and sold International Harvester equipment for Frank Armstrong in North Manchester.  As a devoted Christian, Von was always willing to share his faith with others.  He was a member of the Harmony Christian Church in Leisure, and also enjoyed attending the Abundant Life Church in rural Kokomo.  He formerly served on numerous boards at Harmony Christian Church; served five years on the Madison-Grant school board; and was an active member of De-Molay as a young man.  He was honored to be a school board member at the time of the groundbreaking of new the Madison-Grant School, and he organized the Purdue Glee Club to present at the event.  He especially enjoyed attending church auctions and 4-H auctions so he could increase the bids to help raise money for these groups.  Von was known for his "wheeling and dealing" to get the best price for anything he bought.  He loved dining out, and there wasn't a restaurant in a 100-mile radius that he had not visited at least once.  Von and Mary were nearly always together – raising their family and working on their family farm.  In their later years, they especially enjoyed spending winter months in Florida.  They traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and were proud to have traveled to 48 of the United States through the years.  Von was well-known for his hugs which he gave out freely and his sincere interest in people's life stories.  More than anything, Von loved all his family and farming.  He entered the Heavenly gates after his family assured him the family farm would be just fine.  He will be great missed by all who knew and loved him.

Von's family legacy includes daughter, Kathy A. (husband Robert Jr.) Sallee of Elwood; son, Monte B. (wife Annette) Waymire of Fairmount; 8 grandchildren, Jordan (wife Katie) Schwab, Mallory (husband Jake) Gillihan, Jed Waymire, Jeremy Kyle Waymire, Jacob Ryan Sallee, Jaquelyn Raye Sallee, Beth Ann Sallee, and Krista Lynn Sallee; 5 great-grandchildren, Riley Gillihan, Hailey Gillihan, Dylan Conwell, Jada Vincent, and Brennen Cordell Sallee ; 2 sisters-in-law, Wilma Witt of Westchester, OH and Marjorie Spangler of Anderson.  Von was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary L. Waymire in 2017; and brother, Kyle B. Waymire who died in an accident in 1945.
