Obituary

Virginia "Lynn" (Puterbaugh) Updegraff , age 72 of North Carolina and formerly of Elwood, passed away on June 6, 2022 at Kempton of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, North Carolina after a sudden illness.  She was born July 14, 1949 in Elwood, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Craigo) Puterbaugh.  Lynn was raised in Elwood and was a 1967 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School.  She enrolled in Ball State University and later earned an Associate Degree in Library Studies in 2007.  Lynn married Martin "Marty" Updegraff on October 8, 1967, and they shared 53 years of marriage together before his passing in 2020.  Lynn and Marty lived in numerous places in support of Marty's military career before settling down in North Carolina.

Lynn worked at the Onslow County Library for many years and retired from that position.  She loved her job being surrounded by her best friends and favorite books.  Lynn was considered "well read" and especially loved reading books with her mother and analyzing what they had read together.  She loved nothing more than entertaining her beloved mother for several summers and winters in Indiana during her retirement.  Lynn's passing has been hard, but her family is comforted knowing that she and Marty have been reunited in Heaven.

Lynn's family legacy includes her son, Daniel (Tammy) Updegraff of North Carolina; two siblings, Jay Puterbaugh and Carol Moore (Bob Hartley, Jr.) all of Elwood; brother-in-law, Thomas (Marsha) Updegraff and family; sister-in-law, Margery Frantz and family; aunt, Flora "Sissy" (Dallas) Walker; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and favorite cousins, Linda and Nancy, whom she was always getting in trouble with in their younger days.  Lynn was met in Heaven by her parents; husband, Marty Updegraff; daughter, Elaine Updegraff; brother, Jack Puterbaugh; grandparents; and four-legged friends, Wendy, Whitey, Babe, and Smokey.

A memorial service celebrating Lynn's life and legacy will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner of East Main Street Christian Church officiating.  Burial of her ashes will follow the memorial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Elwood.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the memorial service at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Harmony House Mission or the Heart of Hoosierland Humane Society through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com.
