Victor "Harold" Gerard, age 82 - a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood after an extended illness. He was born May 29, 1932 in Elwood, the son of Herbert and Maddie (Love) Gerard. He retired in 1975 from Delco Remy Division of General Motors in Anderson where he had worked as a Utility Man for more than 28 years. Harold served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War and was stationed at various military bases including Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Fort Bellevue, Virginia; Fort Richardson, Alaska; and Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Harold married the love of his life, Evelyn Y. Parr on June 6, 1953, and they shared over 60 years of marriage together. He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood. He was also a member of the U.A.W. #662, the Elwood V.F.W. #5782, and the Elwood American Legion. He enjoyed fishing and especially loved riding his bike and walking. For a time, he helped at Rockie's restaurant – "My Favorite Place" in Elwood, and he also volunteered at numerous Knightstown Children's Home functions in Elwood. Harold will always be remembered for being friendly to everyone and never knowing a stranger. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family and his grandchildren. Harold's family would like to thank the staff and residents of Community Parkview Care Center for all the kindness they have shown to Harold.
Harold's surviving family includes, daughter, Carol (husband Roger) Ashby of Elwood; son, Brian Gerard of Indianapolis; 5 grandchildren, Christy Gerard of Elwood, Misty Gerard (boyfriend, Dave Cooper) of Elwood, Brian Gerard of Elwood, Jenny (husband Wade) Wingler of Danville, and Matthew (wife Sara) Ashby of Elwood; 7 great-grandchildren, Austin Hinchman, Dylan Gerard, Dontrez Gerard, Katie Wingler, Jacob Wingler, Eleanor Wingler, and Alex Gerard; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn (Parr) Gerard who passed away on February 14, 2014; brother, Francis E. Gerard; sister, Rita Lees; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Gerard.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Harold's life will take place at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 20, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood with Father Dan Duff officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Elwood, and include military honors conducted by the U.S. Army and the Elwood V.F.W. Honor Guards. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 6 PM on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood and will include a Rosary Service at 5 PM.
