Steven A. Courtney , age 65, of Elwood, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026 at Elwood Health and Living after a long illness. Born July 9, 1960, in Chula Vista, California, Steve was the son of Leslie C. and Hedy Carolyn (Michaels) Courtney. A 1978 graduate of Elwood Community High School, Steve spent his life doing what he loved: working with his hands.  Steve was the owner and operator of Steve's Automotive in Elwood for many years prior to beginning his over the road, long haul trucking career.  A master mechanic, Steve built and raced his own drag cars, and could be regularly found competing at area dragstrips.  A division championship at Muncie Drag Strip afforded him the opportunity to race at nationals held in Norwalk, OH.  A jack of all trades, and the king of DIY, Steve could tackle any blue collar project known to man.  If you were lucky enough for a dinner invite, you would know what a great cook he was.  He took great pride in his landscaping of his property, and enjoyed watching his flower and veggie gardens grow.

Steve was an active member of the Elwood Elks lodge for many years.  He was an avid fisherman and took pictures of the "big ones" he caught for proof!  After leaving Indiana in 2008, he continued his trucking career driving locally in Newark, AR.  The slower Southern pace provided Steve countless hours to fish the Mississippi River and other Southern waters, where he landed real monster fish.  He was a great neighbor and friend to all.

Steve's family would like to express their immense gratitude for the care he received while at Elwood Health and Living.

Steve is survived by his sister, Leslie (Tim) Finan of Florida; 3 nephews in Indiana; 1 niece in Florida; 6 great nephews; 2 great nieces; and many extended family members and friends.  Steve is preceded in death by his loving parents; grandparents; and numerous aunts and uncles.

Steve's wishes were to be cremated and keep his services intimate with a memorial visitation for family and close friends from 12:00 to 1:00 pm on Friday, April 3, 2026 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with the service following immediately.  Burial to follow at Elwood City Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with his parents and grandparents.  Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood is honored to handle Steve's arrangements.  Online condolences and memories may be shared with the family at copherfeslermay.com.
