Sammy C. Fisher, age 74 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital following an extended illness. He was born July 10, 1943 in Elwood, the son of Chester E. and Verna Irene "Nan" (Stanton) Fisher. Sammy was last employed as a truck driver for over 20 years, and retired in 2015. He formerly worked for Delco Remy division of General Motors in Anderson for 23 years and retired from there in 1983. Sammy was a 1961 graduate of Wendell Willkie High School, and was active F.F.A. organization during his school years. As a young man, he grew up working on the Mays Family Farm in Elwood. He also later worked at the Elwood Coca-Cola plant for a time before starting at Delco Remy. Sammy formerly was involved in square-dancing and was active in C-B radio communication, and used the handles "Nighthawk" and "Super Pickle". He also enjoyed fishing, antiques and auctions, and hunting – especially hunting from an airplane. Sam is at peace now and reunited with other family members in Heaven.
Sammy's family includes a son, Sammy R. (wife Sandy) Fisher, of Alexandria; daughter, Karmela S. Fisher of Anderson; sister, Sherry L. (husband Bruce) Vanbuskirk of Elwood; 3 grandchildren, Whitney K. (Courtney) Smith, Samantha Jo "Sammy" Fisher (Chad), and Zachary Ty Fisher (Keith); 3 great-grandchildren, Gage, Jaxon, and Knox; and several nieces and nephews. Sammy was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Terry Fisher; and grandson, Jeffery Bodean Chesney.
Cremation will take place and private services will be held at a later date. Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home is honored to care for Sam's cremation arrangements.
