Obituary

Ronald R. Gallatin , age 87 and a longtime resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 13, 2021 holding hands with his wife at Elwood Health and Living following a brief illness.  He was born July 29, 1934 in Sherrno, Illinois, the son of John A. "Pete" and Freda D. "Dee" (Sharp) Gallatin.  Ron was a 1953 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School.  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959.  Ron married the love of his life, Sara L. Legg, on April 7, 1963, and they shared over 58 years of marriage together.  He retired from Continental Can where he worked in production for over 30 years.  Ron was also well-known for being the owner of a historic local restaurant, "Gallatin's Sandwich Shop" in Elwood for 21 years.  He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood.  Ron was also a member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368; member of the Elwood Lions Club; and formerly enjoyed collecting and working with miniature trains.  He will be greatly missed.

Ron's family includes his wife, Sara L. Gallatin of Elwood; brother-in-law, Robert Legg of Elwood; and 2 sisters-in-law, Judy Roseth of Indianapolis and Barbara Mitten of Indianapolis.  Ron was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Jean Gallatin, Jack Gallatin, and Roger Gallatin; brother-in-law, William Legg; and sisters-in-law, Wilma (and husband Richard) Bannon and Mary (husband Robert) Wade.

A graveside memorial service honoring Ron's life will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at the Elwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Roberta Cook of the First United Methodist Church officiating.  Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Military and Elwood V.F.W. honor guard.  Entombment of his ashes will take place after the service at the Mausoleum.  Health precautions for the safety of the family and all visitors are greatly appreciated.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the First United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com.
