Robert S. Burchette, age 93 of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 25, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born April 9, 1923 in Frankton, the son of James F. and Josephine (Swartz) Burchette. Robert retired in 1985 from Delco Remy Division of General Motors in Anderson as a tool and die maker for over 40 years. He was a 1942 graduate of Frankton High School, and later served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He married Theresa Lytle on February 14, 1947 and they shared more than 69 years of marriage together. Robert was a devoted member of East Main Street Christian Church where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, Trustee, and member of various boards through the years. He was also a member of the Quincy Masonic Lodge #230 and a lifetime member of the Elwood VFW #5782. Robert was an avid woodworker, enjoyed camping, and had the ability to fix nearly everything. He was also very proud of his home that he built himself. More than anything Robert will be remembered for his love and devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Robert's family includes his wife of more than 69 years, Theresa Burchette of Elwood; 3 sons, Michael (Maryann) Burchette of Elwood, Gary (Debbie) Burchette of Summitville, and Mark (Judy) Burchette of Elwood; 3 grandchildren, Sandy (Doug) Bowerman of Elwood, Scott Burchette of Elwood, and Shadd (Janine) Burchette of Camby; 5 great-grandchildren, Daikan, Jonathan, Michael, Connor, and Wyatt; 2 step-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bob (Marilyn) Lytle of Fort Walton Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 siblings, Joan Boyer, Wiletta Savage, James Burchette, Hester Updegraff, and Gladys Nelson.
A funeral service celebrating Robert's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at East Main Street Christian Church in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and the Elwood VFW honor guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 PM to 8 PM on Friday, April 29, 2016 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood, and will include Masonic Lodge Memorial at 7 PM.
