Obituary

Ricky L. Smith , age 71 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at Ascension-St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood.  He was born May 9, 1953 in Elwood, the son of Marvin L. and Eileen (Cox) Smith.  Rick was a member of the class of 1971 at Elwood Community High School and attended United Christian Church in South Elwood as a youngster.  He worked in production at Guide Lamp division of General Motors in Anderson for over 25 years and retired in 2003.  He also formerly worked at State Plating in Elwood.  Rick married the love of his life, Mary A. Everson, on July 16, 1971, and they shared over 53 years of marriage together.

Rick's life exemplified what being a Christian is all about – friendliness to everyone, caring for others before himself, and unwavering devotion to his family.  He was a member of the U.A.W. #663 in Anderson.  Rick and Mary enjoyed golf cart rides together to the park, family vacations to the mountains of Tenessee, and watching birds.  He especially enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle with his good friend, Barney.  Rick was known for taking great pride in his home and property as well as building all kinds of things.  He was an avid Indianapolis Colts football fan and rarely missed watching a game.  Rick's life has left a lasting impression on all his family, and he will never be forgotten.

Rick's family includes his wife, Mary Smith of Elwood; two daughters, Kathy (Scott) Spicer and Rachael (Robert) Turpin all of Elwood; two sisters, Shirley Clymer of Elwood and Judy (Sonny) Cole of Frankton; 5 grandchildren, Brandon (Jessica) Adams, Tyler Adams, Kristi Adams (Jonnie), Elizabeth Annie (Casey) Young, and Kevin (Caitlin) Spicer; 5 great-grandchildren, Levi, Sydney, Roman, Elliott, and Nathaniel; special cousin, Marcia (Brian) Pattishal; and several nieces and nephews.  Rick was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Terry Todd; and beloved dog, "Boxer".

Rick's wishes were to be cremated.  A Celebration of Life will be announced in the coming months.  Funeral and cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Elwood Animal Shelter to honor Rick's love of animals.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
