Richard Stephen "Steve" Jones, age 63 of Gas City, died Monday, July 28, 2014 surrounded by his family at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 27, 1951 in Marion, the son of Richard S., Sr. and Doris (Helm) Jones. He retired in 2008 from Indiana & Michigan Power Company where he worked as a lineman for more than 34 years. He was a 1969 graduate of Mississinewa High School in Gas City, and had been active in his class reunion committee for many years. Steve was proud to be a lineman and was a member of the IBEW Union. He was also a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Gas City; former member of the Indiana National Guard; and member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed tinkering and fixing things in his garage – especially anything related to electronics or computers. He was known for his ingenious ideas for solving problems, and formerly built numerous bicycles for children in financial need. Steve was an avid NASCAR fan; enjoyed fishing; and especially loved spending quality time with his grandchildren and family who will always remember his great sense of humor. He was recognized by the Elwood Chamber of Commerce in 1996 for his many contributions to the Elwood community. Steve will be greatly missed by all his friends and family.
Steve's family includes his devoted wife of 18 years, Jeanne (Drake) Jones of Gas City; 6 children, Christy (husband Ben) Clark, Jennifer (husband Ali) Iqbal of Las Vegas, NV, Bronc Jones of Elwood, Heidi (husband Jim) Abel of Fishers, Geoff (wife Nicole) Cook of Yorktown, and Erin (wife Darlene) Cook of Indianapolis; 2 sisters, Becky (husband Don) Hill of Fairmount and Shirley (husband Bob) Spangler; 17 grandchildren, Landon Caldwell, Lauren Caldwell, Logan Caldwell, Audra Clark, Amber Clark, Kaitlin Clark, Malachi Jones, Taylor Jones, Conner Jones, Omar Ben Mellouk, Sami Iqbal, Kaiser Iqbal, Sydney Abel, Payton Abel, Colin Cook, Micah Cook, and Mya Cook; 5 great- grandchildren, Bennett, Kole, Drake, Darek, and Makenzie; special mothers-in-law, Caroline Drake of Noblesville, and Flo Anderson of Frankton; sister-in-law, Julie (husband Larry) Weaver of Elwood; brothers-in-law, Greg (wife Patty) Drake of Kokomo, and Bob Drake of Noblesville; niece, Emily; 2 nephews, Josh and Austin; his children's mothers, Brenda and Ronii; and special pets - dog, "Sadie" and cat, "Millie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Chad Clark; great-grandson, Zak Clark; father-in-law, Marion Drake;and best friend, Jerry Wampner.
A Service celebrating Steve's life will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Father Norm Morford of St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 PM on Thursday prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
