Raymond "John" Wisman , age 69 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 16, 2023 at his home following a brief illness. He was born May 4, 1954 in Elwood, the son of Paul H. Wisman and Lorena Lucille (Whisler) Wisman. John was a graduate of Elwood Community High School and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He married Edna L. "Edie" Easton on November 19, 1993, and they shared over 8 years of marriage together before her passing in 2002. John retired from the Indiana National Guard as a Sergeant after 20 years of service. He also formerly worked at Essex Wire in Elwood for many years.
John was an avid gun enthusiast and a member of the Elwood Conservation Club. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and building model war ships. John was a proud veteran and very patriotic. In his free time, he enjoyed watching westerns and war movies. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Elwood.
John's family includes a step-son, Brad Phillips (companion Alexis Capps) of Elwood; 3 siblings, Julie (Bill) Hendley of Indianapolis, Jean Ann (Dane) Knowlton of Camden, Alabama, and Edith (James) King of Anderson; 2 grandchildren, Keagan Phillips and Corbin Wilkin; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by both his parents and his beloved wife, Edna "Edie" Wisman.
A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at the Elwood branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with President Ken Vehikite and Bruce Whisler officiating. Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 pm prior to the memorial at the church. Burial will take place at a later date in the Springdale Cemetery in Bunker Hill where military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army. Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home has been entrusted with John's arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
