Obituary

Phyllis Faye (Johnson) Howat, age 85 of Elwood went to be with the Lord and her beloved, Frank, on Monday, January 9, 2017.  She passed away at her residence surrounded by family after an extended illness.  She was born on September 17, 1931 in Monon, the daughter of William T. and Leticia (Campbell) Johnson.  She was a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother.  She was a graduate of Pulaski High School.  Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood, and a founding member of the American Legion #228 in Francesville, Indiana.  She married Frank Howat on December 23, 1948, and they shared over 57 years of marriage together.  She loved playing cards and enjoyed playing the organ and piano.  She enjoyed traveling with Frank, and they took several memorable trips during their years together.

Phyllis' surviving family includes 3 sons, Lee (wife Brenda) Howat of Monticello, KY, Lynn Howat of Anderson, and Tim (wife Rosemary) Howat of Lafayette; 2 daughters, Gaye (husband Danny) Savage of Elwood and Jamie (husband Rick) Gard of Claypool; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Frank Howat in 2006; grandson, Andrew; great-grandson, Tommy; and several siblings.

Cremation will take place per Phyllis' wishes.  A Life Celebration gathering and visitation for both Phyllis and Frank will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 2 to 4 PM at the East Main Street Christian Church fellowship room.   Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.  Online expressions of condolence may be made at copherfeslermay.com.  Cremation arrangements were entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.
