Obituary

Phil H. McKnight, age 92 of Elwood, died Saturday, May 28, 2011 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following a brief illness. He was born September 13, 1918 in Cicero, Indiana the son of Frances H. and Rhoda (Clark) McKnight. He was owner of McKnight's Farm Equipment Store – a longtime family business in Elwood, and retired in 2004 when the business closed. Phil was a 1936 graduate of Elwood High School and attended Purdue University. He married Mary Lucille Monroe on October 28, 1939. He was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood. He was a member of the Elwood Lions Club for over 60 years, and was well known for promoting the club's annual fruit sale. He was also a member of the Quincy Masonic Lodge in Elwood and the Scottish Rite in Indianapolis. He formerly enjoyed fishing and was a member of the Elwood Jaycees.

Survivors include: Wife of 71 years – Mary "Lucille" (Monroe) McKnight of Elwood; Nephews – William J. (Marti) Tatum of Brooksville, FL and Thomas F. (Virginia) Tatum of Hiawassee, GA; Special Nephew – David (Karen) Monroe of Anderson; Special Friends – John & Clara Updike, and the William & Betty Caldwell family; God-Daughter – Amy Caldwell-Hoffman of Richmond; and several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; Sister – Olive Ann Tatum; and Brother – Henry McKnight.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 PM Sunday, June 12, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Elwood with Rev. Chris Dare officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 PM on June 12, 2011 prior to the memorial service at the church. Entombment will take place at a later date in the Elwood City Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Elwood Lions Club. Arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.
