Morris E. "Morrie" Cooper , age 87 and a longtime resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 17, 2021 at his home following health complications. He was born December 17, 1933 in Springfield, Tennessee, the son of Charles and Mary (Morris) Cooper. Morrie worked as a utility man at Delco Remy in Anderson for 31 years and retired in 1985. He was a member of U.A.W. #662 in Anderson. Morrie married Peggy G. Goings on January 10, 1953 and they shared 68 years of marriage together. Together, Morrie and Peggy raised four children and created several generations of beloved grandchildren.
Morrie was a devoted fan of NASCAR and rarely missed watching a Sunday race. He also enjoyed playing his guitar; loved fishing with family and friends; and was a huge I.U. basketball fan. More than anything, Morrie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Morrie's family legacy includes his wife, Peggy Cooper of Elwood; four children, Danny (wife Susan) Cooper, Donna (husband Bob) French, Dave Cooper (Carol Brewer), and Douglas (wife Julie) Cooper - all of Elwood; brother, Bob Cooper of Elwood; sister, Joyce (husband Rick) Hodson of Elwood; 10 grandchildren, Autumn Beaman, Kristen (husband Kevin) Crist, Rob (wife Amanda) French, Aubrey Harris, Alex (husband Dustin) Adams, David Cooper II, Michael Cooper, Kailee Cooper, Courtney (husband Zeb) Carson, and Claire Cooper; 4 step-grandchildren, Kurt Simpson, Kasie Humphries, Katie Melvin, and Kolton Melvin; 2 sisters-in-law, Debbie (David) Morrow of Anderson and Marcia Goings of Alexandria; and several nieces and nephews. Morrie was preceded in death by both his parents; sister, Eurie Brown; brother, Charles Cooper; in-laws, Doc and Wanda Goings; brother-in-law, Butch Goings; and sister-in-law, Judy Mountcastle.
A private funeral service and gathering will be held at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner of East Main Street Christian Church officiating. Cremation will follow the service, and burial will take place privately at a later date. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Elwood Animal Shelter through the funeral home.
