Miriam Holland, age 95 of Lake Placid, FL and formerly of Elwood and Syracuse, passed away peacefully on her birthday, May 9, 2019 at her home in Florida. She was born May 9, 1924 in Elwood, the daughter of George W. and Violet M. (Watkins) Tubbs. Miriam was a 1942 graduate of Elwood High School. She married the love of her life, Charles R. "Bob" Holland on August 29, 1946, and they shared over 72 years of marriage together. Miriam worked as a bookkeeper for the Orestes Canning Company (later Red Gold Co.) for over 25 years, and she retired in 1975. She was formerly active with the Lady Elks. She and Bob enjoyed many years living on Lake Wawasee in Syracuse before moving to Lake Placid, Florida in 1992. She was passionate about children and loved volunteering at Lake Placid Elementary School for 12 years. Miriam enjoyed playing cards - especially bridge, and she loved family gatherings. She was also an avid Indiana University basketball fan and especially liked coach Bobby Knight. Miriam was known for being a great cook in her former years and enjoyed cooking for her family. Miriam's family was more important than anything, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Miriam's family includes her husband, Charles R. "Bob" Holland of Lake Placid, FL; daughter, Becky Beckley of Lake Placid, FL; son, James Holland; granddaughter, Kelly Campbell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 5 siblings, Loretta Hughes, Delmas Tubbs, William Tubbs, Lavonne Russell, and Gene Tubbs; and granddaughter, Amanda Beckley.
A funeral service celebrating Miriam's life will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 17, 2019 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Julia Bratton of First Christian Church in Alexandria officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the funeral on Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cornerstone Hospice in Sebring, FL through the funeral home. Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
