Obituary

Michael D. Maish , 62, a beloved fixture of the Elwood community, passed away on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Cardinal Care in Muncie following an unexpected illness. He was born November 30, 1963 in Elwood to Victor D. and Ruth N. (Bertram) Maish.  Mike graduated from Elwood High School in 1982.  He worked for a brief time at McDonald's and with a crew maintaining rest stops along the Interstate.  A lifelong resident of Elwood, Mike was known to everyone in town. He had inherited his father's gift for connecting with people—Mike never met a stranger. His daily walks through Elwood became a cherished ritual for the community, as he would wave at every passing car, offering a simple reminder to have a good day. His warm smile and sweet personality were constants that brightened countless lives.

Mike loved sharing his passion for good music with family and friends. He found joy in life's simple pleasures and never let challenges dim his optimistic spirit.  Above all, Mike treasured time spent with his family. His legacy of kindness and community spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Mike is survived by 3 sisters, Vickie (Alan) Muey of Alexandria, Melissa (Michael) Massey of Roanoke, and Rachel (Montana) Goens of Elwood; 3 nephews, Alan Michael Muey, Quentin Massey, and Tucker Goens; niece, Avery Massey (fiancé Evan Gooch); great nephew, Tye Muey; 2 great nieces, Layla Muey, and Raven Muey; and numerous cousins, and many extended family members.  Mike is preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of Mike's life will take place at 3:00 pm on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 pm prior to the service on Thursday, January 29, 2026 at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Parkinson's Foundation.  Online condolences and memories may be shared with Mike's family at copherfeslermay.com.
