Matthew D.
Miller
Sep 26, 1953 — Jul 16, 2025
Rev. Matthew Dwight "Grampy" Miller , age 71 of Fishers, Indiana, was called home to be with the Lord on July 16, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family and the enduring grace of his Savior. Born on September 26, 1953, in Defiance, Ohio, Matthew devoted his life to ministering the love and hope of Christ Jesus to everyone he encountered. He graduated from Defiance High School in Defiance, Ohio in 1971. Matthew married the love of his life, Sherrill Joy Coffey on July 26, 1974. As faithful servants and compassionate shepherds, they began their ministry at the young age of 21 at Alma Wesleyan Church in Alma, Michigan. He went on to serve Friendship Wesleyan Church in Muskegon, Michigan for nine years. Matthew and Sherrill then planted deep roots in Elwood, Indiana, where they spent 23 years pastoring and caring for the people of Central Wesleyan Church and being very active in the Elwood community.
Even after his retirement from full-time ministry, Matthew continued to live out his calling - offering spiritual care to hospice patients and their families in the Indianapolis area for more than eight years. His legacy is one of presence, prayer, and boundless encouragement. Matthew earned his Bachelor's degree in Biblical Studies from Marion College (now Indiana Wesleyan University) in 1975 and later completed his Master's degree in Biblical Studies in 1990, as well as a Master's degree in Theological Studies from Christian Theological Seminary in 1995. In recent years, Matthew and Sherrill were devoted members of Trinity Wesleyan Church in Fishers, Indiana. Matthew also enjoyed serving as Adjunct Professor at Indiana Wesleyan University for several years at several campuses in Indiana.
Matthew was known for showing up - literally and figuratively. Whether it was knocking on your door just to check in or cheering wildly and loudly from the stands at any sporting event, he was always fully present. He rooted for everyone, especially those facing battles, and his passion for people was unmatched. The communities and people that he positively impacted were beyond measure. Matthew greeted everyone he encountered with his signature, welcoming smile.
Matthew's family includes his wife of nearly 51 years whom he lovingly referred to as "My Sherrill", Sherrill Miller of Fishers; 3 children, Tadd (Julie) Miller of Indianapolis and their children Ethan and Ellie, Phillip (Margaret) Miller of Indianapolis and their children Cameron, Carolina, Cooper, and Cosette, and Amanda Capshaw (wife of Pastor Ben Capshaw) of Elwood and their children Isaac and Noah; sister, Rachelle Denny of North Carolina; brothers and sister-in-law, John (Esther) Coffey, Eileen Yates (wife of Al), Russell (Barb) Coffey, Judy (Jody) Boyles, and several nieces and nephews. Matthew was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Pastor Benjamin Capshaw; niece, Victoria Teague (whose husband Terry survives); brother, Mark Miller (whose wife Jimsey survives); his parents, John and Mary Miller; his parents-in-law, Clarence and Leila Coffey; and 2 brothers-in-law, Al Yates and Gary Coffey.
