Mary Evelyn
Fred
Apr 12, 1938 — Feb 2, 2026
Mary Evelyn Fred , age 87 of Elwood, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2026 at her home. Born April 12, 1938 in Elwood to Frank and Jane Anne (Jackson) Preston. Mary was a 1956 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School. She married Richard "Dick" Fred on August 5, 1960, sharing 22 years together until his unexpected passing in 1982. True to her independent nature, Mary forged ahead on her own terms, never letting circumstance dictate her path.
Mary was a former member of East Main Street Christian Church in Elwood. She started working at her parents' Preston Bus Service before embarking on an impressive 33-year career as a school bus driver for Elwood Community School Corporation, from May 8, 1978 to January 1, 2011. She created her own sanctuary, welcoming birds, squirrels, and deer to her yard. Her schnauzer companions weren't just pets—they were chosen family, spoiled and adored. She enjoyed taking vacations, and especially enjoyed many memorable trips with her daughter to Tennessee and St. Pete Beach. Mary liked to watch NASCAR and cheer for her favorite driver, Ryan Newman. She was one of the biggest fans of the Indianapolis Pacers, and would even make sure to spread the news to her family on how they were performing. She liked to crochet blankets and give them to family members. Mary will be remembered as a caring mother, grandmother, and sister. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
Mary is survived by 3 children, Robert (Roxie) Fred of Elwood, Carol (Dave Cooper) Brewer of Elwood, and Jim Fred of Alexandria; 3 grandchildren, Ciera Fred of Elwood, Bradlee (Bridget Heilman) Brewer of Indianapolis, and Hope (Joey Stull) Fred of Elwood; brother, Jack (Marilyn) Preston of Bradenton, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law, Paul and Doris Fred; husband; brother, James Preston; and sister, Peggy Etchison.
A funeral celebrating Mary's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home with Rev. Roger Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Elwood City Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2026 prior to the service.
