Obituary

Marilyn Jane Darrow Fettig , age 93 of New Lancaster, Tipton County, died in her home on April 09, 2024 after a long and fulfilling life.   She was born on March 26, 1931 in Elwood, the first child of Charles Waldo and Mildred (Grose) Darrow.

She married Maurice Edwin Fettig on August 25, 1951.

Marilyn was a 1949 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School and a 1953 graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington with a B.S. in Education.  She taught school for one year in 1953-54 at Osborn Elementary School in Elwood and then for the next 15 years, was a full- time mother to her nine children.   During this time, she also took night classes and earned her Master's Degree in Education in 1971.  Marilyn began her lengthy career as a teacher in Tipton Schools in 1968 and taught until her retirement in 1991.  At one time, she was the interim principal of New Lancaster School.   She kept a copy of and believed a quote stating that a person cannot leave a better legacy to the world than a well-educated family, and thus used her teaching income to finance all nine of her children's college educations.

Marilyn was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood and a lifetime member of the Indiana University Alumni Association.  While at I.U. she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.  Marilyn was also a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Society, and a former member of the local Delta Theta Tau Sorority.

Marilyn enjoyed reading, gardening, needlework, traveling abroad, and going on lake and beach vacations.  She was an accomplished pianist and also played the clarinet and violin in her youth.  She was a gifted writer and kept journals of her travels to 60 foreign countries and 48 U.S. states.   She was blessed with many lifelong close friends, who shared her same interests.

Marilyn is survived by:  4 Sons – Kurt Darrow (Lisa) Fettig of Tipton County; Jeff Maurice (Marcia) Fettig of St. Joseph, MI; Kris Charles (Kasey) Fettig of Miami County; and Dr. Todd Joseph (Tonya) Fettig of Hartford City; 4 Daughters – Kaye Denise Kilgore of Galena, IL; Jane Marice (Larry) Harper of Tipton County; Lynn Terese (David) Malson of Newaygo, MI; and Beth Elise Mitchell of Tipton County; 24 Grandchildren; 29 Great-Grandchildren; and her sister, Andrea Darrow Farquharson of Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Moe; son, Greg Edwin Fettig; granddaughter, Rebecca Kilgore; parents Waldo and Mildred Darrow; brother, Joe Charles Darrow; and sister, Martha Darrow Clouser.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood.   A funeral mass will immediately follow at 1:00 p.m. with Father Dennis Goth officiating.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Elwood.  The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund - 1306 South A Street, Elwood, IN 46036.  Online condolences to the Fettig family may be made at www.copherfeslermay.com.
