Obituary

Margery A. Frantz , age 72 and a longtime resident of Frankton, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024 at Community Hospital in Anderson after an extended battle with breast cancer.  She was born July 26, 1952 in Elwood, the daughter of Elmer Updegraff and Doris Ann (Williams) Updegraff-Metz.  Margery was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood, and her faith was the center of her life.  She was a 1971 graduate of the Indiana School for the Blind.  Margery continued her education by obtaining an Associate degree in business and later her Bachelor degree in criminal justice.  Due to her blindness, she was not able to work in her chosen professions of law at that time.  She worked and volunteered for over 20 years at St. Mary's School in Alexandria, and also formerly worked at K-Mart in Elwood for 6 years.

Margery was a very independent and active person despite her vision disability.  She enjoyed traveling with her family all over the U.S. and going on numerous cruises.  She loved playing games - especially Euchre, Spades, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokémon-Go.  Game tournaments took to several states to compete, and she was very accomplished.  Margery was a devoted Indiana Pacers fan.  More than anything, she loved spending time with her family nearly every day.

Margery's family includes 3 children, Nathan Frantz (fiancé Lesley) of Frankton, Jill (Jeff) Sebastian of Anderson, and Joseph Young of Frankton; brother, Thomas (Marsha) Updegraff of Woodland Park, Co.; 2 grandchildren, Jonathan Thomas and Lily Thomas both of Anderson; beloved pets, Murph and Holly; and several nieces and nephews.  Margery was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Martin Updegraff in 2022; son-in-law, Jeff Thomas in 2015; and sister who passed away at birth, Kathy Updegraff.

A funeral mass celebrating Margery's faith will be conducted at 11 AM on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood with Father Dennis Goth officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Elwood.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.   Memorial contributions are suggested to the funeral home to assist with funeral expenses through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
