Obituary

Lois Ruth (Pennington) Vangets, age 91 of Anderson and formerly of Elwood, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2019, at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital following a brief illness and a long, well-lived life.  She was born Oct. 11, 1927 in Martinsville, the daughter of James and Susie (McDaniel) Pennington.  Lois was a 1945 graduate of Wendell Willkie High School in Elwood, and went on to marry her husband of 71 years and a WWII veteran, Jack Vangets, on Feb. 14, 1947.  Lois retired from the Jackson Township school system where she worked as an elementary school secretary for several years.  She served as Tomato Queen in the Elwood community, presiding over the Elwood Tomato Festival in 1947.  She and Jack resided in Lapel and Anderson for many years, most recently at Bethany Pointe Health Campus.  Lois attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Lapel where she was a member of the Rachel Circle which raises funds for families in need during the holidays.  She enjoyed painting, traveling, making memory books, cooking, and playing games such as Aggravation and Bingo.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her 6 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  Lois will be remembered as having a kind heart and a great sense of humor.

Lois's family includes her husband of 71 years, Jack Vangets of Anderson; son, Dana (Jan) Vangets of Muncie; 2 daughters, Luanne (Dallas) Canfield of Anderson, and Tami (Daniel) Paddock of Lapel; 6 grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Smith, Todd (Chelle) Vangets, Traci (Greg) Robbins, Troy (Katrina) Canfield, Landon (Amanda) Paddock, and Cam (Jill) Paddock; 13 great-grandchildren, Holly Robbins, Shelby Robbins, Brevin Smith, Chaylee Smith, Ian Canfield, Silas Canfield, Isaac Vangets, Keaton Vangets, AJ Vangets, Cale Paddock, Maddie Paddock, Charli Paddock, and Ace Paddock; and several nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Gene Pennington and James Pennington, Jr., and sister, Rose Alice Edelman.

A funeral service celebrating Lois's life will be conducted at 3:00 pm on Wed., June 5, 2019 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with family member, Greg Robbins, officiating.  Burial will be in the Elwood City Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 pm on Wed., June 5, 2019 prior to the funeral at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.   Memorial contributions may be made to the Rachel Circle at Trinity United Methodist Church through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories: copherfeslermay.com.
