Lindell Lee Jarrett, age 86 of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at I.U. Health-Tipton Hospital in Tipton after an extended illness. He was born February 5, 1928 north of Elwood, the son of Leo and Veda (Etchison) Jarrett. He was a farmer all of his life, and started helping his father on the farm at an early age. He also worked at his family's business, Jarrett Canning Company – a family owned tomato packing company. Lindell was a 1946 graduate of Elwood High School and attended Purdue University studying agriculture. In his youth, he was active in 4-H Club and DeMolay. He married Phyllis S. Smith on January 20, 1951 at Harmony Christian Church officiated by Rev. Kermit Pugh. He served on the board of directors at the First National Bank and Star Financial Bank for many years. Lindell was a devoted member of Harmony Christian Church in Leisure where he served as Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. He was a charter member of the Duck Creek Volunteer Fire Department and was also a member of the Quincy Masonic Lodge #230 in Elwood. He enjoyed collecting antique tractors and showcasing them in local parades. He enjoyed visiting with his family – especially his granddaughters and great-grandson, Caleb.
Lindell's family includes his wife of 63 years, Phyllis S. (Smith) Jarrett of Elwood; 2 children, Julia L. Jarrett of Elwood, and Mark F. (wife Karen) Jarrett of Elwood; brother, Kenny (wife Mary) Jarrett of Elwood; sister, Anita Ruth (husband Don) Barber of Elwood; sister-in-law, Bonnielou Wampler of Marion; 4 grandchildren, Amy Hall (friend Rebecca) of Franklin, TN, Ashley Hall of Philadelphia, PA, Lindsay Hall (husband Jaymey) Hardin of Brentwood, TN, and Dr. Angela Jarrett (husband Michael Hilyar) of Kokomo; great-grandson, Caleb Lee Sexton of Kokomo; nieces and nephews, Doneta (husband Smoke) Merida, Keith (wife Barb) Barber, Tony (wife ViAnn) Barber, Jeff (wife Jenny) Barber, and Joyce Barber all of Elwood, Diana (Candy) Hook of Indianapolis, Rick (wife Valerie) Jarrett of Elwood, and Mick (wife Cheryl) Jarrett of Huntington; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Lindell was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Schuyler and Alice (Mock) Jarrett, and J. Frank and Emma (Hester) Etchison; in-laws, Farley and Doneta (McCoy) Smith and Jerry Wampler; and nephew, Phil Barber.
Funeral services celebrating Lindell's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 30, 2014 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Kent Stookey officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greentown. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 7 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Purdue Foundation Cancer Research or the Rainbow Christian Camp in Converse – both through the funeral home.
