Obituary

Larry W. White, age 73 of Alexandria, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following an unexpected and brief illness.  He was born December 9, 1944 in Kennett, MO, the son of Joseph T. and Geneva F. (Ridings) White.  Larry married the love of his life, Barbara S. Byrd on May 8, 1965, and they shared over 53 years of marriage together.  He was the first hired employee at ELSA Corporation in Elwood holding employee badge #1, and was known as "LW" by his co-workers.  He worked in the maintenance tool room at ELSA for 23 years and retired on April 30, 2010.  Larry also formerly worked at R.G.F. Manufacturing in Elwood starting in 1965, and he transferred to Schwitzer Corporation in Elwood where he worked from 1966 to 1987.  Larry enjoyed fishing, formerly hunting, and birdwatching.  Larry especially enjoyed working in his garage – tinkering and fixing all types of things.  He was very interested in guns, and was well-known for rebuilding and repairing guns for many people.  Larry previously bowled in leagues at Wells Lanes and was also an avid Civil War enthusiast.  He also formerly enjoyed watching baseball, and the Atlanta Braves was his favorite team.  Larry was a youth sports coach with Chuck Zink for many years in Elwood when his children were involved in local sports.  He and Barbara enjoyed several memorable trips through the years to Florida and Missouri to visit extended family members.  More than anything, Larry loved to spend time with his family whom he loved very much.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Larry's family legacy includes his wife, Barbara White of Alexandria; daughter, Sherry (husband John) Wright of Elwood; son, Joe (wife DeeDee) White of Valparaiso; 2 sisters, Joann Hamilton of Troy, IL, and Wilma Chanell of Doniphan, MO; 5 grandchildren, Nathan Plue of Elwood, Hannah Plue of Elwood, Lindsey White of Middleburg, FL, Madison White of Middleburg, FL, and Aaron White of Valparaiso; several nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family members on Barbara's side of the family.  Larry was preceded in death by his parents; and 2 brothers, Glen E. White and J.C. White.

A funeral service celebrating Larry's life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Amos Carmichael of Zion Chapel Church officiating.  Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery in Elwood.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  Online expressions of condolence may be made at copherfeslermay.com.
