Katherine M. Roe, age 83 of Elwood, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017 surrounded by her family at her home following an extended illness. She was born June 3, 1934 in Elwood, the daughter of Hansel W. and Mary M. (Larimore) Smith. Katherine worked as a Loan Processor for 20 years at Star Financial Bank in Elwood and retired in 1995. She attended elementary schools in Leisure and New Lancaster, and was a 1952 graduate of Wendell Willkie High School in Elwood where she was a member of the marching band. After graduation she was employed at the Indiana Gas Company in Elwood. Katherine married the love of her life, Roger E. Roe, on May 26, 1956 and they shared 61 years of marriage together. Shortly after marriage Katherine and Roger resided in Little Rock, Arkansas where Roger completed his tour of duty with the U.S. Air Force. Katherine was a faithful 70-year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elwood where she served as a Deacon and was a member of the Presbyterian Women's Association. She was also a former member of Tri-Kappa Sorority, Oakland School PTA, and the Tipton Rural Youth. Katherine enjoyed cooking, making candy, and baking pies. She also enjoyed camping, boating, bowling, and square dancing. She spent numerous hours gardening, growing flowers, and took great pride in caring for her home. After retirement, Katherine and Roger loved to travel together and spend time with their four grandsons and granddaughter. She was a generous and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Vincent Hospice and all the caregivers who provided wonderful care for Katherine over the last several months.
Katherine's family legacy includes her husband, Roger E. Roe of Elwood; 2 children, Luanne (husband Jeff) Fettig of Michigan City, and Tom (wife Lori) Roe of Brownsburg; 5 grandchildren, Jason (wife Christa) Fettig of Colorado, Kyle Fettig of Florida, John Fettig of Michigan City, Craig Fettig of Michigan City, and Faith Roe of Brownsburg; great-grandson, Jacob Fettig of Colorado; 3 sisters, Margaret (husband George) Off of Tipton, Joanna (husband Duane) Etchison of Elwood, and Martha (husband Steve) Henson of Ohio; sister-in-law, Rosetta Voss of Cicero; brother-in-law, Ron (wife Virginia) Roe of Tennessee; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Richard Smith; sisters-in-law, Jetta Smith and Rosetta Roe; brother-in-law, Robert Roe; and 3 nephews, John Etchison, Roger Smith, and Dan Sallee.
A funeral service celebrating Katherine's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on December 9, 2017, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Mae Leech of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Friday, December 8, 2017, at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
