Obituary

Judith Ann Mitchell , age 79 of Anderson, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at AMG Specialty Hospital in Muncie following a brief illness.  She was born September 18, 1940 in Elwood, the daughter of Joseph William Holmes and Norma Frances (Elliott) Holmes Bias.  She was a 1958 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School in Elwood.  Judy was married to James Henry Mitchell, Jr. on September 24, 1960 until his unexpected passing in 1967.  She worked in production at Delco Remy division of General Motors in Anderson for 32½ years until her retirement in December 1998.  She was a member of the U.A.W. #662.  Judy enjoyed watching football and tennis on television; playing euchre; reading and studying history; and formerly enjoyed dancing, bowling and crocheting.  More than anything, Judy was devoted to her family who meant the world to her.  She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Judy's family includes her significant other of over 35 years, Bill Pherson of Anderson; daughter, Jamie (husband Jeff) Hughes of Elwood; son, Todd Mitchell of New Palestine; step-son, Kurtis (wife Mindy) Mitchell and family of Anderson; sister, Gwen (husband Ron) Casteel of Westfield; half-sister, Dee (Bias) Heaton of Arcadia; 2 grandchildren, Jason (wife Molly) Abner of Carlsbad, CA and Brachen Abner (Carly Cassell) of Indianapolis; 3 great-grandchildren, Jonas Lenz Abner, Everett Joseph Abner and Wyatt James Abner; former step-daughters, Leslie (VanHorn) Hunter of Kokomo and Cheryl (VanHorn) Fix of Alexandria; close family member with whom she was raised, Joan Sharp of Elwood and the late Merrill "Jude" Holmes; 3 sisters-in-law, Karon Holmes of Elwood, Linda Remington and Judith Quinn both of Alexandria; her beloved Maltese, "Milly" at home; and several nieces and nephews.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Danny Joe Holmes.  She was also preceded in death by her uncle who raised her, John Merrill (wife Margaret) Holmes.

A funeral service celebrating Judy's life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Father Dan Duff of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating.  Burial will follow in Parkview Cemetery in Alexandria.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday, October 28, 2019 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.   Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
