Obituary

Joan E. Leathers , age 92 of Elwood, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at home on Saturday, October 29th, 2022 surrounded by her family.  She was born August 19, 1930, the first daughter of Harold and Gladys Stone, followed by her brother, William and her sister, Linda.  Joan graduated as valedictorian from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1948 and attended Ball State University.  She married Thomas D. Leathers on December 10, 1949.  Joan and Tom started dating when they were 15 and were married for nearly 73 years.  Joan was the Bookkeeper/Secretary of Leathers Boat House in Elwood for 31 years.

Joan enjoyed being a Cub Scout Den Mother and teacher for both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.  She was a longtime member of East Main Street Christian Church in Elwood.  Joan was an avid reader and doll collector.  She loved her family dearly and enjoyed gatherings at Coon Lake, Lake Barbee, and on the St. Joe River in Michigan.  Joan was a member of Jobs Daughters earlier in her life.

Joan's family legacy includes two sons, Timothy (Pennapa) Leathers of Peoria, IL and Jeffrey (Debra) Leathers of Louisville, KY; daughter, Jane (Vince) McCurdy of Waterford, CT; eight grandchildren, Kimberly (Aaron) Lucy, Carrie (Melvin) Leathers, Joanna (Stephen) Yarbrough, Rachel (Chad) Meyer, Sarah Leathers, Thomas McCurdy, and Patrick McCurdy; ten great-grandchildren, Landon, Cohler, and Mackenzie Lloyd, Elaina Leathers, Gianna and Zelda Garcia-Leathers, Benson and Jon Lucy, and Oliver and Noah Yarbrough.  Joan was preceded in death by her parents and a precious granddaughter, Hillary Rose McCurdy.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, at 11 a.m. at East Main Street Christian Church in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner officiating.  A private graveside service will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Elwood.  Visitation for family and friends will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service at the church.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  Memorial contributions may be made to the East Main St. Christian Church, 1801 Main Street, Elwood, IN 46036.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com .
