Jan Merl
Chambers
Dec 5, 1939 — Jan 6, 2020
Jan M. Chambers , age 80 of Elwood, passed away on Monday, January 6, 2020 at Bethany Pointe Health Campus in Anderson following an extended illness. He was born December 5, 1939 in Muncie, the son of Ancil and Loucille (Slinkard) Chambers. Jan retired from Delco-Remy in Anderson in 1999 after 36 years as a machinist and project coordinator. He was a 1957 graduate of Daleville High School and served his country in the U.S. Air Force Reserves as a radio operator. He married Barbara R. Loser in 1994. He was a member of the U.A.W. #662 and the American Legion. He was a man of varied interests and talents. At an early age, he was a very good artist making detailed sketches of hot rods, and his high school drafting work was used as an example for other students. He was sent overseas on several occasions as a technical advisor when Delco was making major purchases of new machinery. He also operated his own business installing aluminum siding.
Jan was involved in his community as a Little League baseball coach for many years, and served as a Democrat Party Precinct Committeeman. He was a Corvette owner and enthusiast, and he was fan of Dale Earnhardt and NASCAR. He and Barbara were also avid I.U. fans who enjoyed watching games in their I.U. clothing. Jan especially enjoyed watching old Westerns and John Wayne movies. His favorite pastime was using his flight simulator - piloting real-time flights in different aircraft to various destinations; and this passion continued up to the time of his passing. Jan's family would like to thank Elwood Health and Living, Park Place Assisted Living, Bethany Pointe Health Campus, and Heart-To-Heart Hospice for the exceptional care that they provided to Jan.
Jan's family includes his brother, Fritz (wife Suzy) Chambers of Anderson; sister, Dianne Norris of Noblesville; special longtime friends, David & Tracey Beeman of Anderson; and very special step-grandson Mitchell Mullins of Elwood. Jan was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother Joe M. Chambers; and his wife, Barbara R. Chambers in 2017.
