James G. York , age 93 of Elwood, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024 at Ascension St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following a long well-lived life. He was born Feb. 10, 1931 in Bethel, Kentucky, the son of Cecil and Maude (McIlvain) York. Jim was a 1950 graduate of Bethel High School, and following graduation enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Shelton on April 6, 1957 and shared 67 years of marriage together. Jim retired in 1997 from General Motors in Marion after 32 years. He enjoyed fishing, horses, working on tractors, and doing leather work. He was a member of Harmony Christian Church. More than anything, Jim loved his family dearly and will be greatly missed.
Jim's family includes his wife of 67 years, Carolyn York of Elwood; 3 children, Steven York of Elwood, Vicki York of Elwood, and Ricky (wife Cheryl) York of Kentucky; daughter-in-law, Melissa York of Elwood; 6 grandchildren, Urik York, Zebulon York, Kobe York, Alyssa (husband Brandon) Fields, Michael (wife Kim) York, and Christy York; 5 great-grandchildren, Faith, Connor, Lucy, Eli, and Maci; and several extended family members and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Lance York in June 2024; and grandson, Neil Wiseman.
A funeral service celebrating Jim's life will be conducted at 12:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor John Davis of New Beginnings Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Forrestville Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Air Force and Elwood V.F.W. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11am to 12 pm on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society through the funeral home. Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
