Howard Conway Heath, age 82 of Windfall, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 7, 2015 at Century Villa Healthcare in Greentown following a six-week illness. He was born June 20, 1933 in Kirklin, (Boone County) IN, the son of Howard Hopkins and Emma I. (Conway) Heath. By his second year of life, his family returned to the Windfall community. He was a direct descendant of Stephen Hopkins, who came on the Mayflower. Howard married the love of his life, Helene Frances Legg on November 6, 1950, and graduated in 1951 from Windfall High School where he was active in school sports and various musical organizations and activities. In high school, he received the Citizenship Award as a freshman, attended Boy's State, and was president of his graduating class for three years. He attended college at Ball State in Muncie. Howard truly loved music, and he was a trained musician in piano and organ. He also loved farming and started farming in 1951 on the Legg family land, which has been in the family since 1905. He was manager, co-owner, and president at Butcher Agri-Service in Leisure and later worked as the manager at the Point Isabel Top-Ag Fertilizer Plant. He also formerly held a realtor's license, was a certified crop advisor, a certified pesticide applicator and board member of the former Production Credit Association. Howard served as president of the Wildcat Township Advisory Board for over 25 years. During those years, he oversaw the modernization of the equipment for the Wildcat Township Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in developing cooperation between the town of Windfall and Wildcat Township to build the Community Building. He was a devoted member of the Windfall Christian Church from an early age where he was presently serving on the finance committee and was also a Deacon of the church. He was the present teacher of the "Crusaders for Christ" Sunday school class, and was one of the longest living members of the church. Howard led his Windfall High School class reunions for the 25th, 50th , and 60th years, was a Life Member of the former Windfall Masonic Lodge, Past Worthy Patron of the Windfall Chapter No. 17 Order of Eastern Star, and 49-year member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368. Howard enjoyed singing, reading- especially history, playing pool with his friends, and more than anything loved his family.
Howard's family includes his wife of nearly 65 years, Helene Frances (Legg) Heath of Windfall; son, Lyle (wife Joanne) Heath of Muncie; brother, Gerry (wife Nelda Johnson) Heath of Beavercreek, OH; three grandchildren, Dr. Kyle Howard Heath of Menlo Park, CA, Dr. Kathryn Heath (husband Dr. James) Fransen of Louisville, KY, and Kristopher Austin Keesling of Southport; two nephews, Jeff (wife Wanda) Heath of Findley, OH and Brad Heath of Flagstaff, AZ; niece, Verna Kay (Legg) (husband Jerry) Kelley of Logansport; and two great-nephews, Brian Kelley and Aaron Kelley. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Lynn Charlene Heath in 2014, and brother-in-law, Ralph F. Legg.
A funeral service celebrating Howard's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at the Windfall Christian Church with Rev. Carl Roudebush and Chaplain David L. Stout officiating. Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery in Windfall. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Friday, August 14, 2015 at Windfall Christian Church and one hour prior to the funeral service on Saturday at the church.
