Herschel "Wayne" Moody, Jr. , age 90 of Port Charlotte, Florida and formerly of Anderson and Elwood, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at his daughter's home in Florida after a long, well-lived life. He was born March 20, 1932 in Elwood, the son of Herschel W. and Jewel E. (Crafton) Moody, Sr. Wayne attended Elwood schools and later served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked at Delco Remy in Anderson for over 30 years as a Gear Cutter and retired in 1980.
Wayne lived his life to the fullest and was known for staying very active. He developed a love of music from his father, Herschel W. Moody, Sr., who was a trumpet player in Tommy Dorsey's band. This made an impression on young Wayne's life and his developing musical talent. Wayne was formerly a ballroom dancing instructor with Arthur Murray Studios for many years. Musically, he played several instruments including the harmonica, ukulele, and piano. In his younger years, Wayne was an accomplished Checkers player and ranked 4 th in the State of Indiana in competition.
Wayne was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, swimming, and mushroom hunting. After retirement, he set out on an adventure traveling to 49 of the 50 U.S. States – all except Alaska. Wayne also enjoyed playing in dart tournaments, playing tennis and teaching others the sport, playing ping-pong, and shooting pool. He was a member of U.A.W. #662 in Anderson. Wayne had a love of animals and especially enjoyed watching college basketball and football.
Wayne's family legacy includes a daughter, Evelyn (husband Chris) Mueller of Rotonda West, FL; son, Phillip (wife Hyla) Moody of Newnan, GA; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Mistretta, Jessica Alston, Joshua Moody, and Angela Hughes; 8 great-grandchildren, Olivia Mistretta, Lauren Alston, Landon Alston, Kendall Alston, Shastiny Austin, Hunter Austin, Hannah Fluharty, Bracken Hughes; 4 great-great-grandchildren, Atticus Hegge, Lochlan Hegge, Ava Austin, and Aliyah Austin; and a niece, Lisa Satterfield. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Susan Ann Nichols.
A funeral service celebrating Wayne's life will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Chaplain Rob Mifflin officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery in Windfall. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 pm prior to the funeral on Wednesday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
