Obituary

Harold Rex Minix , age 73 of Elwood, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2026 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne following extended illnesses. Born December 18, 1952 in South Bend, he was the son of Rex Minix and Anna (Hancock) Hayes. Rex was a proud member of the class of 1970 at Wendell L. Willkie High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Navy. Throughout his life, Rex was defined by his unwavering work ethic and his deep devotion to his family. No matter the job, whether at State Plating, Chemlawn, TrueGreen, or even selling encyclopedias door to door, Rex worked tirelessly to provide for those he loved. His family always came first, and he dedicated himself to ensuring their happiness and well-being. Rex cherished time spent with his grandchildren, especially taking the boys fishing, and found joy in sharing simple moments together. Generous to a fault, he showed his love through small acts of kindness—giving thoughtful gifts and caring for animals, including every stray that crossed his path. Known throughout Elwood for his daily long walks, Rex was the steady foundation and heart of his family, always putting their needs before his own and leading by example in both work and love.

Rex is survived by 2 daughters, Mary Leigh (Terry Bolden) Minix of Elwood, and Kimberly L. (Dusty) Minix-Myrick of Marion; step-daughter, Rae Anna Phillips-Marcrum of Elwood; 5 grandchildren, Lance Andrew Harting, II, Shaudrey E. Adams, Adelynn P. Chisolm Minix, Zachary Minix, and Ariana Myrick; sister, Nadine (Lutz) Minix-Kimmer of Germany; and several extended family members and friends.

Rex is preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Herman Hayes; an infant brother; first spouse, Cynthia Spradlin; and second spouse and close friend, Mary Beth Dial.
