Obituary

Harold L. "Jack" Chriss , age 94 of Elwood, went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, October 26, 2024 after a long, devoted life of service to the Lord.  He was born March 9, 1930 in Elwood, the son of Harold L. and Geneva (Davenport) Chriss, Sr.  Jack graduated in 1948 from Wendell L. Willkie High School before serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He remained a very patriotic person all his life.  Jack married his soul mate, Shirley Ann Brummet, on Oct. 31, 1953, and they shared nearly 71 years of marriage together before her passing just weeks ago.  Jack worked as a fork truck driver at Continental Can Corporation in Elwood for over 30 years and retired in 1988.

Jack was a devoted Christian all of his life and gave his life to the Lord on December 3, 1958.  This commitment was dear to his heart, and he was well known for sharing God's word with everyone he met.  Jack was especially known for his affiliation with the Worldwide Tract Ministry and devoted his time and energy in distributing tracts everywhere he went and volunteering at the publishing company.  He and Shirley enjoyed traveling and camping with their travel trailer for many years.  They would often be seen together wearing red, white, and blue patriotic clothing.  In addition to working and caring for his own home, Jack owned and operated several rental properties in the community for 33 years.  He became a regular participant in local parades in recent years riding his bicycle well into his 90's.  Jack also had a special place in his heart for animals all through the years and currently enjoyed time with his dog, "Dolly", who was never far from his side.  There is no greater comfort than knowing that Jack has been reunited with Shirley in Heaven, and a joyous reunion with all his family will take place one day.

Jack's legacy includes a son, Craig (Ginger) Chriss of Elwood; 3 grandchildren, Lisa (Shawn) Arbuckle of Avon, David (Devon) Chriss of Pittsburgh, PA, and Scott Chriss of Brooklyn, NY; great-granddaughter, Abby Arbuckle of Avon; daughter-in-law, Mary Chriss of Carmel; sister, Carolyn "Boogie" Johnson of Cincinnati; special family members, and Bill and Judy Nichols-Johnson of Cincinnati.  Jack was preceded in death by both his parents; wife, Shirley Chriss; and son, Kevin Chriss.

Per Jack's wishes, a graveside funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2024 at the Elwood City Cemetery with Pastor Amos Carmichael officiating.  Burial will follow.  Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  The family prefers no flowers, but would encourage memorial contributions be made to Worldwide Missionary Press to honor Jack's longtime devotion to tract ministry.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com.
