Gertrude A. Everling, age 83, a long-time resident of Elwood, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Community Hospital in Anderson after a brief illness. She was born July 1, 1931 in Knoxville, Tennessee the daughter of William and Zura (Bourff) Loy. She retired in 1998 from the Elwood Publishing Company where she had been a paper carrier for the Elwood Call-Leader for more than 28 years. She had also formerly worked at Ex-Cell-O Corporation in Elwood. Gertie married Wayne C. Everling, Jr. on March 3, 1962 and they shared nearly 36 years of marriage together. She was baptized in the First Pentecostal Church in Elwood. Gertie formerly enjoyed working with ceramics, socializing and talking with friends on the telephone; and spending time with her family. She was devoted to her family and loved to cook for them for many years. Above all else, Gertie will be remembered as a person who enjoyed her life and never met a stranger.
Gertie's family includes 3 sons, Wayne (wife Mary) C. Everling III of Elwood, Timothy J. Everling of Elwood, and Donald A. Everling of Elwood; 2 sisters, Louise Shepard of Converse and Bernice Webb of Warsaw; 6 grandchildren, Jessica, Wayne, Chris, Megan, Zach, and Jacqueline; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne C. Everling, Jr., who died June 11, 1998; sister, Virginia Wall; and 2 brothers, Randall Loy and Herbert Loy.
A funeral service celebrating Gertie's life will be conducted at 1:00 PM Monday, June 29, 2015 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Rex Small, family friend, officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 6 PM on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
