Georgia Irene Cole, age 81 and a lifelong resident of Elwood passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital after a long, well-lived life. She was born May 25, 1935 in Elwood, the daughter of Samuel F. and Helen L. (Myers) Nickles. Georgia worked at Red Gold in Elwood for seasonal production for several years, and also formerly worked for many years at Dickey Nursing Home in Elwood in the dietary department and was an Avon Representative. She would be most remembered for formerly working at Edgell's Sandwich Shop in Elwood for numerous years. She attended Elwood schools with the class of 1953, and later took several college courses at Indiana Business School in Anderson. She married Cecil "Ralph" Cole on June 6, 1969, and they shared nearly 28 years of marriage together. Georgia was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood and formerly attended the Trinity United Methodist Church in Elwood until the church closed. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was also an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting, baking and making noodles, and visiting casinos for fun. She and Ralph visited much of the U.S. during their traveling and camping years. Georgia will always be remembered as someone who was willing to help others and was especially devoted to caring for her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Georgia's surviving legacy includes 6 children, Pam (husband William) Morris of Elwood, William Mason of Lansing, KS, Barney (wife Jill) Cole of Elwood, Becky Mason-Holman of Wilmington, North Carolina, Donald (wife Denise) Mason of Panama City, FL, and Steve (wife Joanna) Hurd of Elwood; 2 sisters, Donna Chambliss of Elwood and Helen Gore of Marion; special niece and caregiver, Diana Jones of Elwood; 16 grandchildren, Dawne, Amy, Josh, Cameron, Lindsay, Lacey, Leslie, Samantha, Shelby, Joe, Jake, Brandon, Elizabeth, Tanis, Ethan, and Kato; 10 great-grandchildren, Reed, Zara, Noah, Bryce, Dominic, Damari, Keaton, Tazily, Becky, and Maddie; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cecil "Ralph" Cole in 1997; son, Marty Hurd in 1987; granddaughter, Jennifer Super in 2014; and 4 brothers, Curtis Nickles, Samuel Nickles, Rev. Jim Nickles, and William Nickles.
A funeral service celebrating Georgia's life and faith will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church, 1500 North A Street, Elwood with Pastor Doug Bohall officiating. Burial will follow in the Forrestville Cemetery in rural Summitville. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 AM to 1 PM on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 prior to the funeral at First United Methodist Church in Elwood. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Women through the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.
