Obituary

George L. Kintzel, age 91 of Frankton, died Thursday, September 1, 2011 at Westminster Village in Muncie after an extended illness. He was born in November 11, 1919 in Warsaw, Indiana, the son of George W. and Ethel (Henderson) Kintzel. George worked in education all of his life, and was the first Director of the John H. Hinds Vocational School in Elwood when it opened in 1968. Later, he became the Evening Programs Director for the Anderson Area Vocational School. Following High School, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. While serving, he was wounded in Tinian, Okinawa and later received a Purple Heart Award for his valor. He married Doris M. Long December 14,1945. Following his discharge from the Marines, George attended Ball State University under the GI Bill and became a licensed teacher. In 1949 he began teaching Industrial Arts at Albany High School. He served as the class sponsor for the class of 1954 at Albany High School, and he has maintained a close relationship with the members of that class throughout his lifetime. In the fall of 1954, he moved to Elwood where he began teaching Industrial Arts and later became director of the Distributive Education Program. He was an active and devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood and was also a lifetime member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368. George loved music and theater and was a season ticket holder at Emens Auditorium, the Honeywell Center, the Anderson Symphony and the Wagon Wheel Theater. He especially enjoyed building and fixing things, and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include: Daughter - Mavis (husband William) Catalfio of Muncie; 2 Sisters – Marjorie Leeth of Colorado Springs, CO, Betty Wright of Elkhart; 2 Grandchildren – John (wife Donna) Catalfio of Scottsdale, AZ, Robert Catalfio of Pahrump, NV; 2 Great-Grandchildren – Jacob Catalfio and Taylor Catalfio; and Special Companion – Dorothy Willis of Muncie and formerly of Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his Parents; his Wife - Doris M. (Long) Kintzel who died March 9,1995; and 2 Sisters – Elsie Brown and Mildred Blade.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Chris Dare of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood officiating. Visitation will be held 12:00 to 2:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at K. of P. – I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Frankton with military honors provided by the Elwood V.F.W. Post #5782 and U.S. Military Honor Guards.
