Garry Lee Moore , age 63 of Elwood and formerly of Swayzee, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 as a result of an automobile accident in Grant County on his way to work. Garry was born March 20, 1956 in Elwood, the son of Walter and Joe Ann (Crouse) Moore. He was a 1974 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School in Elwood and later graduated with an Associate Degree from Glen Oaks Community College in Three Rivers, Michigan. Garry married the love of his life, Joyce Thornberry on August 21, 1976, and they shared over 43 years of marriage together. Garry served his country for 30 years in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of Major in the 38 th Infantry Division as an officer in the Signal Corps and retired in 1998. He received extensive training in various areas during his Army career. He also formerly worked for both Guide Lamp and Delco Remy (Delphi) divisions of General Motors in Anderson and Kokomo for a total of 25 years. Most recently, Garry worked for the R.G.I.S. Company as in inventory specialist for the past 5 years.
In his free time, Garry enjoyed woodworking and was well-known for fixing just about anything for anybody. He always greeted everyone with a smile and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Garry was a loyal member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed deer hunting through the years. He will be remembered for loving his family and his country; and he will be greatly missed.
Garry's family includes his wife, Joyce Moore of Elwood; 3 sons, Patrick (wife Dinah) Moore of San Antonio, TX, Michael Moore of Bryant, and Steven (wife Katie) Moore of Jonesboro; 2 sisters, Candy (husband Lee) Scholl of Elwood and Terrie (husband Jerry) Rittenhouse of Elwood; 4 grandchildren, Kelly Moore, Sean Moore, Sam Tarpein, and Jack Tarpein; father-in-law, Charles Thornberry of Elwood; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and in-laws. Garry was preceded in death by both his parents and his mother-in-law, Mary (Cannon) Thornberry.
A funeral service celebrating Garry's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Celebrant Chuck Bell and Deacon William Thornberry officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army and the Elwood V.F.W. Honor Guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm on Wednesday prior to the funeral at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
