Evelyn Marie (Fern) Montgomery, age 93, a lifelong resident of Elwood, died Thursday, December 25, 2014, on the birthday of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood after a brief illness. She was born March 27, 1921 in Elwood the daughter of Ralph and Lizzie Fern. She was a graduate of Elwood High School and worked at Indiana Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and chief operator for more than 25 years. She married Walter Lawrence Montgomery on November 14, 1942. Evelyn was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in Elwood.

Evelyn's family includes a son, Michael R. Montgomery (fiance' Susan Held) of Virginia; and a daughter, Maura (husband Bill) Montgomery Keihn of North Carolina; 3 grandchildren, Andrew Montgomery of Virginia, Shaun Keihn of FL, and William Keihn of CA; and 2 great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn Keihn and Baxter Montgomery.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of almost 39 years, Walter L. Montgomery who died November 4, 1981; and a sister, Lucille McPhearson.

A funeral service celebrating Evelyn's life will be conducted at 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Elwood, 10099 North State Road 37, Elwood, with Pastor Kal Rissman officiating. Private entombment will take place in Elwood City Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 5 PM on Sunday, December 28, 2014 prior to the funeral service at St. John's Lutheran Church.
