Eva Jenester Humel, age 85 of Elwood, passed away Monday December 24, 2012 at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood following an extended illness. She was born May 11, 1927 in Elwood, the daughter of Raymond D. and Alice Rebecca (Barnhill) Noland. She was an 8th Grade English Teacher at the Elwood Junior High School and later the Elwood Middle School for 20 years and retired from teaching in 1989. She was also formerly a Home Service Representative for I & M Power Company. Jenester was a 1944 graduate of Elwood High School and a 1948 graduate of Purdue University. She held Bachelor's degrees in both Sociology/Psychology and History/English; and received her Masters degree in Education from I.U.P.U.I. She married Joseph M. Humel on August 3, 1947. She and her husband formerly enjoyed traveling, and she was an excellent cook, having taught many through her job with I & M. Jenester was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Elwood, the Order of Eastern Star, and the Beta Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority. She was also a member of Landon Guild and worked as a volunteer at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital for several years. In the past, she enjoyed playing cards and dominos in several local card clubs.
Her family includes a daughter, Alice (husband Andrew) Denton of Columbus, OH; 5 grandchildren, Alexis Denton of Columbus, OH; Sara Humel, Jonah Humel, Elias Humel, and Lucas Humel all of Henderson, KY; former daughter-in-law, Michele (husband Lindol) Adkisson of Henderson, KY; 2 nephews, Stephen (wife JoAnn) Mason and John (wife Paula) Mason; several great-nephews; and former niece, Lou Ann Mason.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph M. Humel who passed away in 2000; son, Joseph Michael Humel who passed away in 2003; 3 sisters and their spouses, Elizabeth Josephine (husband Lloyd) Boyce, Anna Rebecca (husband Homer) Kimball, and Nora Lee (husband Dallas) Mason; and nephew, Raymond Mason.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Chris Dare of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 to 7 PM on Friday, December 28, 2012 at the funeral home. Delta Theta Tau Sorority will have a Memorial Service at 6:00 PM on Friday evening at the funeral home followed by an Order of Eastern Star Memorial Service at 6:15 PM. Jenester's family would especially like to thank the staff of both St. Vincent Mercy Hospital and Community Parkview Care Center as well as Dr. Gatewood and Dr. Cox for the outstanding care they provided for Jenester.
