Douglas Jay Fernung, age 46, of Bluffton, South Carolina and formerly of Elwood, died unexpectedly June 1, 2013 at his residence. He was born April 8, 1967 in Elwood, the son of David E. and Linda A. (Myers) Fernung. Doug was a Tool Maker and currently the Plant Manager for Precision Machine Systems Co. in South Carolina where he had worked for over 10 years. He was a 1985 graduate of Elwood Community High School and later a 1988 graduate of Vincennes University earning an Associate's Degree in Tool Trades. Doug was an avid outdoorsman, and loved golfing, fishing and living in the Lowcountry. He was a member of the APA Pool League; was an avid South Carolina Gamecocks fan; and especially enjoyed spending time on the river in South Carolina.
Doug's family includes his parents, David E. and Linda A. (Myers) Fernung of Kokomo; 2 brothers, Charles "Chuck" (wife Leslie) Fernung of Lafayette and Eric T. Fernung of Kokomo; nephew, Jacob Fernung; niece, Kara Fernung; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Carl and Rosella Fernung; and maternal grandparents, Chuck and Mary Meyers.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 6:30 PM, Friday, June 14, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with several members of Doug's family officiating. Burial took place in Lowcountry Memorial Gardens Cemetery in South Carolina. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM prior to the service on Friday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Madison County Humane Society through the funeral home.
