Dorothy Rosala "Dot" Richwine, age 98 of Elwood, died peacefully at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood on Saturday, June 1, 2013 in the presence of her family. She was born July 10, 1914 in Elwood, the daughter of William and Mary (Langenbacher) Higgins. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital and was also a devoted farmwife all of her life. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Elwood, and later graduated from Elwood High School in 1933. She also graduated from St. Joseph Nursing School in Fort Wayne in 1936 and received a nursing degree. She married John "Lloyd" Richwine on January 23, 1941. She was a lifelong and devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood. Dorothy was also a member of the Elwood Landon Guild for Mercy Hospital and member of the Lady Elks. She enjoyed living her Catholic faith, reading numerous novels, and playing bridge. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends; watching sports; and visiting her lake home.
Dorothy's family includes 4 children, Bill (wife Carolyn) Richwine of Elwood, Ben (wife Nancy) Richwine of Elwood, Mary Faye (husband Wayne) Collins of Noblesville, and Cindy Bruggner of Whitmore Lake, MI; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of nearly 63 years, John "Lloyd" Richwine who died in 2004; son, Robert G. Richwine who died in 2012; and grandson, Nicholis Bruggner who died in 2009; 4 sisters, Elizabeth Deal, Ann McCain, Armella Higgins, and Rita Kiefer; and 2 brothers, Ted Higgins and Regis Higgins.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at St. Joseph Church with Father Dan Duff presiding. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4 to 8 PM on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood. The Richwine family would like to thank Dr. Robert Helm, Parkview Community Care Center, and St. Vincent Mercy Hospital for the comforting care given to Dorothy. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Joseph Church Restoration Fund or the St. Vincent Mercy Hospital Foundation through the funeral home.
