Doris E. Simmons, age 86 of Anderson, died on December 13, 2011 at Community Hospital in Anderson from a sudden illness. She was born June 14, 1925 in Queens, NY the daughter of John and Viola (Brunge) Henney. Doris was a 1943 graduate of Grover Cleveland High School in New York. She married Guy R. Simmons on January 27, 1946 and they lived in Elwood for more than 30 years. She worked in production at Delco Remy in Anderson for 35 years before retiring in January of 1987. Doris was a member of the Anderson Baptist Church, U.A.W. Union Local #662, and the Anderson Moose Lodge. She loved taking pictures and was known for producing professional-looking family photos that were admired by her family. She enjoyed playing cards, writing special poetry for friends and family, growing flowers on her property, and had an artistic talent of drawing. She also loved watching birds, and she was an avid sports fan - especially of the Chicago Cubs and the Indianapolis Colts. She loved spending time with her family for gatherings and holidays, and will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Survivors include: 2 daughters – Carol (Dwight) House of Perkinsville; and June (Richard) Carey of Alexandria; 3 Sons – Ronald (Patti) Simmons of Elwood; John (Linda) Simmons of Elwood; and David (Michelle) Simmons of Alexandria; Sister – Joan (Steve) Pamas of Garden City, NY;
11 Grandchildren – Angie House, Mike Hurst, Brian (Amy) Carey, Shelly Hurst, Kelly (Danny) Melton, Johnathon Simmons, David House, Lori Simmons, Richard Simmons, Christopher Simmons, and Brian Simmons; 9 Great-Grandchildren; Several Nieces and Nephews; and beloved cats – "Leo" and "Butterscotch".
She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband of 54 years - Guy R. Simmons, who died April 7, 2000; and 2 Sisters – Florence Eckmans and Ruth Phillips.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Charles Webb of the Anderson Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 PM Friday, December 16, 2011 and 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
