Doris Ann Metz, age 85 and formerly of Elwood, died March 8, 2011 at Alexandria Care Center in Alexandria following an extended illness. She was born September 21, 1925 in Elwood. She was a Registered Nurse most of her life, and retired from St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in 1989 where she worked for over 40 years. She also worked as a school nurse and librarian at St. Mary's School in Alexandria for over 10 years, and formerly worked at K-Mart for several years. She was a 1943 graduate of Elwood High School, and later received her Bachelor's degree in healthcare from St. Frances College. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood and was a member of the Daughters of Isabella at St. Mary's Church in Alexandria. She loved her pets, enjoyed reading, and especially enjoyed working with children at St. Mary's School.
Survivors include: Daughter – Margery (Douglas) Frantz of Frankton; 2 Sons – Martin (Virginia Lynn) Updegraff of Richlands, North Carolina and Thomas (Marsha) Updegraff of Lubock, TX; 4 Brothers – David (Diane) Holliday of Shirley, Mickey (Pierre) Holliday of Florida, Phillip (Ulaine) Holliday of Florida, and Steve (Vera) Holliday of South Carolina; 2 Sisters – Harriett (Jim) York of Anderson and Jeanne Strittmatter of Florida; 6 Grandchildren – Daniel Updegraff, Nathan Frantz, Brandon Updegraff, Jill Thomas, Amanda Updegraff, and Joseph Young; 3 Great-Grandchildren - Ashley, Jonathon, and Lily; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents – Clarence and Mary Elizabeth (Hunt) Williams; Brother – Pat Williams; 2 Sisters – Mary Lou Hankley and Genevive Sizelove.
A Funeral Mass will be conducted at 10:30 AM Friday at St. Joseph Church in Elwood with Father Phil Haslinger officiating. Private visitation was requested by her family, and there will be no public visitation. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Elwood.
