Doris J. McFerran, age 75 of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 10, 2018 with her family at her side at home following an extended illness. She was born November 23, 1942 in Alexandria, the daughter of Walter B. and Wilma (Bull) Heartbargar, and was a lifelong resident of the area. Doris was a homemaker and was very devoted to caring for her family. She also formerly worked as a hairdresser in her home for many years. Doris was a 1960 graduate of Alexandria High School. Doris married John R. McFerran on February 25, 1961, and they shared more than 57 years of marriage together. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood where she previously belonged to the Altar & Rosary Society and helped with funeral dinners. She and John enjoyed trips to Patoka Lake. Doris enjoyed sewing, knitting, and cooking – and was known for her delicious fried chicken. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Doris' family includes her husband of 57 years, John R. McFerran of Elwood; 3 sons, Bradly L. McFerran (fiancé Lisa) of Martinsville, Scott J. (wife Michelle) McFerran of Knightstown, and Greg A. (wife Michelle) McFerran of Anderson; brother, Dallas (wife Cheryl) Heartbargar of Hoschton, GA; sister, Nina Paddock of Alexandria; 5 grandchildren, Kyle McFerran (fiancé Lisa), Jessica (husband Pete) Stirn, Taylor McFerran, Morgan McFerran (fiancé Andrew), and Trent McFerran; 2 great-grandchildren, Bradlee Stirn and Tripp Stirn; and several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents.
A funeral mass celebrating Doris' life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood with Father Dan Duff officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Elwood. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Joseph Church Building Fund through the funeral home or the church. Doris' arrangements are entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood, and online expressions of condolence may be made at copherfeslermay.com.
