Donald L. Copus, age 74 of Elwood, died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at his residence. He was born December 29, 1938 in Muncie, the son of Lewis Otto and Pearl (Stookey) Copus. He retired in 1999 from Firestone Corporation in Noblesville where he had worked for more than 35 years as a Quality Control Supervisor. Don attended Wendell L. Willkie High School in Elwood, and later served his country in the United States Air Force while stationed for 4 years in Michigan. He married Nola "Dorlene" Thrasher on July 8, 1966. Don was a former member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Elwood. He was a member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368, the Alexandria Eagles Lodge, and the newly formed Community Service Club of Elwood. He formerly enjoyed camping and fishing, and more recently - enjoyed attending the Elwood Concerts in the Park. He enjoyed music and dancing, and especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family and his beloved grandchildren.
Donald's family includes 4 children, Russell L. (wife Carole) Copus of Missouri, Steven C. (wife Glenda) Copus of Michigan, Cindy (husband Dave) Worsley of Elwood, and Fred Aaron of Kentucky; brother, Charles L. (wife Jackie) Copus of Elwood; 3 sisters, Judy Luzader of Frankfort, Patricia Hawkins of Texas, and Janet Simpson of Elwood; 4 grandchildren, Kristin (husband Brad) Grigsby, Derek Worsley, Robert Copus, and Carina Copus; 4 great-grandchildren, Aurora Eldred, Elijah Eldred, Gavin Grigsby, and Garrett Grigsby; special friend, Mary Noel of Elwood; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of more than more than 35 years, Nora "Dorlene" Copus who died May 8, 2002; and sister, Janice Beeman.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner of East Main Street Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Military and the V.F.W & American Legion Honor Guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
