Obituary

Debra L. "Debbie" Hayes , age 69 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side, on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at AMG Specialty Hospital in Greenfield following health complications and a month-long illness.  She was born on September 28, 1949 in Elwood, the daughter of Max and Eva Mae (Smith) Cole.  She was a graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High in Elwood.  Debbie married Jim Hayes on January 16, 1971, and they shared 48 years of marriage together. They formerly attended the Church of God.  Debbie was a homemaker most of her life, and formerly worked at Mr. Happy Burger in Elwood in the early years of the business.  She and Jim were car enthusiasts, and travelled on the historic "Route 66" many times together over the years.  They also enjoyed numerous trips in their 1956 Chevy Corvette which Jim owned for 50 years.  Debbie was a very caring person, and was known for raising wild animals, squirrels, and birds who needed help.  She also enjoyed spending time with her own animals and pets throughout her life.  More than anything, Debbie was devoted to her family, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Debbie's family would like to thank the nurses and doctors of AMG Specialty Hospital for the wonderful care and compassion they provided for Debbie in her final days.  Their selfless caring will never be forgotten.

Debbie's family includes her husband, Jim Hayes of Elwood; 2 sons, Chad Hayes of Elwood and Chris (wife Danielle) Hayes of Elwood; sister, Dena Fuller of Elwood; 4 beloved grandchildren, Jake Carrillo, Lauren Hayes, Ryan Hayes, and Brandon Hayes; and a niece and nephew, Desi and Drew.  Debbie was preceded in death by both her parents.
