Obituary

Dean Allen Roe , age 63 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025 at Ascension - St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a diagnosis with metastatic cancer just months ago.  He was born July 6, 1961 in Elwood, the son of John William Roe and Betty J. (Smedley) Roe.  Dean was a member of the class of 1981 at Elwood Community High School.  He married his soulmate, Treva L. Huff on July 14, 2001, and they shared over 24 years of marriage together.  In 2024, Dean retired from the City of Elwood where he worked at the Street Department for 10 years.  Prior to that, he worked for Biddle Precision Components in Sheridan for over 15 years.  He was known for being very attentive to detail in everything he completed in his work; Dean did things right.

Dean loved fishing and spending time in nature.  He also enjoyed watching NASCAR and football, working on classic cars, and cruising the "L" in his Pontiac Lemans.  Dean was truly devoted to his family, and he would go out of his way to help anyone in need.  Between himself, his "step-dad" Sam Bower, and now his son, Carson - there was hardly a road or stopsign in Elwood they haven't installed or touched.  Dean will be truly missed by all his family and friends.

Dean's family includes his wife and best friend, Treva Roe of Elwood; 5 children, Jamie McTaggart of Rochester, Anthony Thornberry of Elwood, Deedra Phipps of Oklahoma, Derick Roe of Carmel, and Carson Roe of Elwood; 9 siblings, Donald (Carolyn) Roe of North Carolina, Diana Roe of Indianapolis, David (Diala) Roe of Elwood, Dale Roe of Elwood, Brenda (Tom) McWalters of Michigan, Mike (Regina) Mains of Michigan, Roger (Dodee) Mains of Michigan, Paula (Larry) Nichols of Michigan, and Becky (Rick) Mains of Michigan; 5 grandchildren, Hailee Steinagel, Alexis Phipps, Gracie McTaggart, Malachi Phipps, and Peyton McTaggart; a great-grandchild, Nadene Steinagel; special family members, Ian and Zoe Thornberry; special friends, Danny and Sheri Collier and Sherae and Rob Wright; and many nieces and nephews.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, Donald and Bertha Smedley; step-father, Sam Bower; step-mother, Carol Roe; sister, Louann Cossgrove; uncle, Jack Smedley; 2 nephews, Aaron Scott and Chad Hunt; best friend, Dale Retherford; and step-daughter, Kelsey Huff.

A funeral service celebrating Dean's life will be conducted at 11:00 am on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Dean's friend and former co-worker, Don Garst officiating.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.   Memorial contributions are suggested to Riley Children's Hospital or Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home to assist with expenses.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
