David Lee Heflin , age 76 of Elwood, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at his home following a brief illness. He was born January 8, 1947 in Elwood, the son of Don Lee and Joyce Ann (Elliott) Heflin. David graduated from Madison Heights High School in 1965 before attending and graduating from Ball State University with a Bachelor's Degree in social work. He worked most of his career for the State of Indiana F.S.S.A. as a program coordinator and investigator. David was raised in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elwood.
David served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970, and he was proud of his service. He and his longtime companion, Wanda, enjoyed traveling for many years and had visited all of the U.S. States. David enjoyed playing cards, various games, and especially playing poker. He was known for watching a lot of sports on television. David will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
David's family includes longtime companion of over 20 years, Wanda Howell of New Castle; 2 daughters, Courtney Heflin (companion Nick) and Meghan Doren (wife Taylor); 3 siblings, Karen Vinson of Elwood, Kathy (Martin) Stanley of Anderson, and Dale (Lori) Heflin of Virginia; God-daughter, Kenaii Neal; 3 grandchildren, Quinn Doren, Gabe Heflin, and Hunter Schlechter; good friend, Steve Dickey of Elwood; lifelong friends, Jon Stagman, Rob Stagman, and Paul Hastings; Wanda's sons, Troy Howell and Tony (Stacey) Howell; and several nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by both his parents.
A funeral service celebrating David's life will be held on Friday, May 12, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with his friend, Jack Collier, officiating. Military honors will take place at the funeral home at the end of the funeral by the U.S. Air Force and the Elwood V.F.W. honor guard. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 12 to 2 pm on Friday prior to the funeral at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project. Online condolences may be shared at www.copherfeslermay.com.
