Claude Matthew “Matt” Quillen, age 66, of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2026, at his residence after a brief illness. Born March 18, 1960, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Claude James and Frances Carol (Leahy) Quillen. Matt graduated from Greenwood High School in 1978 and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in surveying from Purdue University. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Korea in the late 1980’s. He remained dedicated to honoring his fellow veterans throughout his life.
Matt was a man of many interests and talents, embodying a well-rounded spirit. Raised in the Catholic faith, he attended Catholic school until the 5th grade, and his values of faith, service, and hard work shone through in all he did.
Matt devoted over 30 years to his career as a registered land surveyor, earning the respect of his colleagues for his diligence and integrity before retiring in 2024. During his tenure, Matt played a pivotal role in projects such as the Airtech Business Park, Hamilton Proper Subdivisions at Geist and Morse, the Chatham Hills of Plainfield, Holliday Farms of Zionsville, and Saxony of Fishers developments. He also worked with multiple healthcare facilities for St. Francis, Methodist and Community Hospitals; numerous IPS school system projects, and others to the benefit and growth of many families, communities and businesses across Indiana. Truly, his heart and soul lay behind the sight of a surveyor's theolodite and he used to tell us children of the many changes he helped with and the ways they came about during drives around the city through the years.
He actively participated in professional organizations, including the Indiana Society of Professional Land Surveyors (ISPLS), and was a valued member of the Elwood V.F.W. and ETS Fraternity Purdue Chapter. As a proud Elwood band parent, he supported his family and community with enthusiasm.
Matt’s curiosity and love of learning were evident in his passion for studying WWII history and his enjoyment of reading. A loyal Purdue and Colts football fan, he also gave his time generously, helping with end-of-the-month meals for many years. Matt’s well-rounded character, strong work ethic, and commitment to others will be remembered and deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Matt is survived by 3 children, Matthew “Danny” Quillen of Ohio, Kayti Quillen (Dave Dollerschell) of Shelbyville, and Becca (Madi) Quillen of Elwood; his partner, Katherine Denniston of Indianapolis; second-wife and mother of Becca, Kerry Quillen of Elwood; sister, Abigail (James) Campbell of Shelbyville; brother, John (Alicia) Quillen of Texas; 3 grandchildren, Atlas Quillen, Lillian Quillen, and Katie Quillen; a great-granddaughter, Allison; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Matt was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Adalade Quillen; brother, Robert Larry Quillen; and first wife and mother of Danny and Kayti, Janelene Eaton.
