Obituary

Claren L. "CL" Johns, age 64 and a lifelong resident of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at his residence.  He was born November 29, 1952 in Elwood, the son of Robert and Phyllis Jean (Knotts) Johns.  CL was a 1971 graduate of Wendell L. Willkie High School, and later joined the U.S. Marines to start his military career.  After serving 4 years in the Marines and the rank of Corporal, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and remained in service for 20 years.  He retired with rank of E-Chief Petty Officer & Chief Aviation Structural Mechanic 5.  CL enjoyed time to himself, but was especially devoted to caring for his mother, Phyllis, right up until the time of her passing in 2014.  He enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycles, and will always be remembered as a caring brother and uncle to his nieces and nephews who loved him very much.

CL's family includes 2 brothers, Milton (wife Carol) Johns of Idaho and Mike Johns of Windfall; sister, Susan Melvin of Elwood; and several nieces and nephews.  CL was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bobby Gene Johns.

A life celebration memorial service for Retired Chief Petty Officer 7, CL Johns, will take place at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Wednesday prior to the memorial service.  Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Navy and the Elwood V.F.W at the funeral home. Per Claren's wishes his ashes will be spread by the U.S. Navy at sea off the coast of California.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation of Indiana.  Online expressions of condolence may be at copherfeslermay.com.
